WATCH AND READ: Spend a pound to spend a penny

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7914542.stm

READING: 'Paris Syndrome' strikes Japanese

A dozen or so Japanese tourists a year have to be repatriated from the French capital, after falling prey to what's become known as "Paris syndrome".

Have you ever experienced something similar to this in Paris or anywhere else?

REMEMBER TO ASK POLITELY

When dealing with customers (tourists, guests, etc), it is very important to be polite to them so that they feel that they are being treated in a special way.

Indirect Questions in English allow us to be able to ask certain questions while sounding more polite than if we used a simple direct question.

Have a look at the following presentation in which you will find different expressions to start using indirect questions.

VIDEO: Flight attendants go creative

Times seem to be changing and we are witnessing new creative ways to get passengers´ attention to the important flight safety instructions. Let´s see these two entertaining ways to present such instructions:

Flight attendants who rap:

Flight attendants who dance:

GEOGRAPHY COMPUTER GAMES

When you work in the Tourism sector it is important to have a good knowledge of where places are: imagine you have to book a holidays for some clients, or you are just curious about exactly where a tourist comes from.

Check your world geography playing this game. I bet you don´t find it that easy. Good luck!

PRONUNCIATION BASICS

Learning the sounds of a new language can sometimes be tough for some students, especially those sounds that are inexistent in their mother tongue. It is very important to be able to communicate successfully what we want to say and sometimes pronunciation becomes an issue as communication can break down due to words being pronounced incorrectly.

Here is a funny video about it:

WRITING: Create your own CV online

When you apply for a job, it is usual to include a curriculum vitae, or CV (called résumé in the US). This is a list of your personal details, educational history, qualifications, experience, and interests—that is to say, the story of your life from a professional point of view.
Europass is a new way of helping people to make their skills and qualifications clearly and easily understood in Europe (European Union, EFTA/EEA and candidate countries) and move anywhere in Europe.

READING: Eco-friendly vacations

Many of you may have heard terms such as Ecotourism, Sustainable Tourism, etc. Nowadays more and more tourists are concerned about the impact their visit may have on the environment and culture of the place visited. As more regions and countries develop their tourism industry, it produces significant impacts on natural resources, consumption patterns, pollution and social systems. People who are going to work in the tourism sector should be aware of this new trend. Let´s have a look at this brochure with suggestions about eco-friendly destinations.

VIDEO: Too fat to fly

What about if you were charged twice for your plane ticket because of being obese? This controversial policy some North American airlines are starting to put into practice is being questioned by many people. READING: 48 hours in a city

What would you recommend tourists to go and see if they only have 48 hours in a city?

Here's a collection of recommendations from The Independent to read:

http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/48-hours-in/

WRITING A LEAFLET: City break holidays

Very often tourists take what we call city break holidays in which they spend a couple of days in a well-known city. To be able to make the most of such a short visit, it is a must for the traveller to have a leaflet with tourist information for a city break visit. This is typically known as a 48 hour-in-a-city report. As a Tourism student you should know how to write this type of leaflet. It has to follow a certain pattern. Let´s see in the following document the parts a 48 hours-in-a-city report must have. This is just a basic example whose structure can be modified:

LISTENING: Future trends in tourism

LISTENING ACTIVITY

So how will tourism develop in the future?

 http://www.britishcouncil.org/professionals-specialisms-tourism-10.htm

ARTICLE: Fair trade and sustainable tourism.

 READING ACTIVITY

An increasing number of customers are concerned about the impact of tourism on destination communities and the environment.  Fuelled by regular newspaper reports on the consequences of travel and tourism, today’s customers are looking for ways of continuing to have holidays, but minimizing the negative effects of them.  Tour operators must respond to this demand, and do more than just pay lip service to ideas of fair trade and sustainable tourism.
http://www.britishcouncil.org/professionals-specialisms-tourism-9.htm

ARTICLE: A different destination

READING ACTIVITY

In these days of mass tourism it’s difficult to find any destinations that have managed to escape the impact of the tourist industry.  It’s harder still to find a beautiful palm tree-filled slice of paradise that has not been irrevocably changed by tourism.  And yet Siwa, an idyllic Egyptian oasis, has somehow managed to embrace a very limited amount of tourism and is so far keeping its unique culture and way of life more-or-less intact.

http://www.britishcouncil.org/professionals-specialisms-tourism-5.htm

ARTICLE: Cruising on the up and up

READING ACTIVITY

There’s been a remarkable turnaround in the cruise holiday industry.  Once seen as the domain of the wealthy, silver-haired and largely American holiday-maker, cruising is now appealing to everyone and every pocket.

ARTICLE: Baggage handling systems

READING ACTIVITY

Over the last few years in Europe and the US the cost of airfares has decreased considerably. Consequently, the number of passengers has increased dramatically. Along with cheaper airfares and newer aircraft there have been other improvements to air travel that are less obvious. The area of baggage handling is an example. Learn more about these developments here.

PODCAST: Ethical tourism

LISTENING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITY

ARTICLE: Ethical tourism

The move towards 'responsible consumerism', with supermarkets now stocking a wide range of fair trade products is leading to a new form of tourism. Supermarket shoppers are more and more aware of where goods come from and the conditions they are produced under. Similarly, consumers are looking for holidays that do not have damaging effects on developing countries.
